What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound scan, sometimes called a sonogram, is a procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of part of the inside of the body. 

What is the main use of ultrasound?

Doctors commonly use ultrasound to study a developing fetus, a person's abdominal and pelvic organs, muscles and tendons, or their heart and blood vessels. Other names for an ultrasound scan include sonogram or an echocardiogram.
